Objective:To summarize the clinical characteristics of foreign bodies in upper gastrointestinal tract and analyze its risk factors for complications. Methods:We retrospectively reviewed the medical data of 200 patients who were diagnosed of foreign body impaction in the upper gastrointestinal tract at Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region People's Hospital(including the General Hospital,Xixia Hospital,Ningnan Hospital and Emergency Center)from January 2015 to December 2016.The clinical characteristics including: 1.age,gender,symptom,reason to ingestion, comorbidities related to digestive tract;2.the type, number, location and size of foreign bodies, sharpness of its edges;3.duration of foreign body impaction, duration of endoscopic performance, endoscopic devices, hospitalization rate, complication rate, mortality rate, and the number of operations were all analyzed. Then we used logistic regression analysis for the evaluation of relative risk of complications.Result:1.The type of upper gastrointestinal foreign bodies included date pits(47.5%),animal bones(26.0%),food bolus(15.5%),drugs packaging(2.5%),coins(2.5%),false teeth(2.0%),buttons(1.5%),plastics(1.0%),metal strips(1.0%)and steel wires(0.5%).2.The size of foreign bodies were 32.98±11.35(6-80)mm.The locations of impacted foreign bodies were the upper esophagus(77.5%),lower esophagus(9.0%),mid esophagus(7.5%),stomach(6.0%).3.There were 198 one achieved in endoscopic removal among the 200 patients, and complications developed in 20 patients(10.0%).Significant complications included perforation(n=9,45%),esophageal erosion(n=6,30.0%),esophageal ulcer(n=4,20.0%),esophage al mucosa bleeding(n=1,5%).Two patients suffered operations because we couldn't treat their perforations through endoscope.4.In logistic regression analysis, risk factors for complications were the duration of impaction that longer than 12 hours(OR = 9.04,95%CI:2.91-28.04;P = 0.000)and the sharpness of foreign bodies' edges(OR = 7.95,95%CI: 2.09-30.21;P = 0.002).Conclusion:1.Date pits are the most common foreign bodies observed in Ningxia region.Esophagus is the most common impacted location and especially in its upper body.2.The duration of impaction that longer than 12 h and sharpness of foreign bodies' edges are the risk factors for comlications. So we need to provide a suitable therapy for these patients after a comprehensive assessment.
