Objective Using vanadate and quinolone as raw material, our aim is to prepare new vanadium-quinolone complexes and their antibacterial properties in vitro will be studied.Besides, when complexes were loaded into polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)films, controllable release was observed by using UV-vis spectroscopy. Methods New vanadium-quinolone complexes have been prepared by solvothermal method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction,IR and elemental analysis.Antimicrobial properties in vitro of the compounds have been studied by both disk diffusion and nano-inorganic materials based detection methods. Results Three types of vanadium-quinolone complexes have been prepared successfully. The complexes of the first type(1 and 2)are composed of two quinolone molecules and a vanadium atom making up a V-like structure by chelate coordination. The second type complexes(3 and 4)formed by the intruduction of MoO3 into the first type complexes,of which the tetrahedon {MoO4} is on top of the V shape unit. The third type complexes are prepared by a polyoxometalate union template and formed the complexes with the γ-[Mo8O26]4- as center.Their sandwich structures are formulated by the connection of terminal oxygen atom of the vanadium atoms from vanadium-quinolone complexes. The results were obtained by a variety of antimicrobial experiments.Since the first type of complexes have better solubility, the paper method was used to test their antimicrobial activities. The antibacterial zone diameters are as follows: Complex 1(dE.coil = 30 mm,dS.aureus = 30 mm),Complex 2(dE.coil = 29 mm,dS.aureus = 30 mm).As the remaining two kinds of complexes solubility are extremely poor,it is necessary to use inorganic nano-powder antibacterial method for the experiment. The antibacterial rates for E.coil and S.aureus are 89.3% and 88.5% for 3,87.9% and 87.0% for 4,91.7% and 90.8% for 5,and 90.9% and 90.1% for 6,respectively.When type II complexes were loaded into polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)film, two kinds of controllable release films formed. They still keep antibacterial activity after 48 h,of which the antibacterial rates are 28% for 3,27% for 4,35% for 5 and 32% for 6,respectively.But the corresponding raw materials CF and NF have no antibacterial effect after 48 h.Conclusions In this thesis, the antimicrobial activities of monocapped vanadium-quinolone complexes are obviously improved. After adding the templating agent, the solubility of complexes decreased,so the antibacterial activity also decreased. But when they were loaded into the polyvinyl alcohol, the antibacterial controllable release has been observed even after 48 hours. Therefore, the preparation of new antibacterial agents by organic-inorganic hybridization is indeed an effective way to enhance antimicrobial properties.
