The supplement is the unique type of Chinese newspapers. Pen Club, Wen Wei Post, as one kind of supplements, is one of Chinese existing supplements that have the longest time of development. It has witnessed the whole history since the establishment of new China and participates in the birth and development of Chinese contemporary literature. The Third Plenary Session is a great turning point for Chinese literature. To certain degree, the works published in the Pen Club from 1979 to 1982 represented the achievement of Chinese contemporary literature's development and the tough process of literary transition. The study of Pen Club has some kind of historical significance that should not be ignored, for regarding the development of Chinese contemporary literature.This thesis will be divided into four parts to study the Pen Club, the first part of which is to elaborate the torturous process of establishing Pen Club, from its founding history to the reformation in new era; from the perspective of political disposition, essays' tradition and the academic atmosphere, the second part is to analysis the characteristics of the works of Pen Club in the early time of transition; the third part is to inquire the fundamental characteristics of Pen Club's literary creation in the transitional period, from the different views of new writers, new works, the creation of veteran writers and the readers; the fourth part is to illustrate the literary position of Pen Club in the new era, from the point of view of cultural taste, editorial policy and paying equal attention to literariness and interest.This thesis will choose the published works of Pen Club from 1979 to 1982 as the objects of study, and maybe involve some works from 1976 to 1979 that have great effect on Pen Club, in order to investigate its status and influence in the history of Chinese contemporary literature. According to its published essays, the works of Pen Club in the transitional period might act as one kind of literary context left investigated. At the important turning point, the characteristics and style presented by Pen Club is enough for it to print an indelible mark on the literary history.
