The Research On Narrative Of Gongyangzhuan

Gongyangzhuan, a Confucian classic, is to explore the ideological implication of The Spring and Autumn Annuals. Since it was composed in the Han Dynasty, Gongyangzhuan has triggered many studies and researches from the perspective of ideological value, with less concern on its literature value, especially its literature value from the perspective of narration. Based on the 45 narrative materials of the book, the present thesis aims to analyze its narration features and its fictionalized narration.Apart from the parts Introduction and Conclusion, the thesis consists of four chapters.Chapter one is the overview of Gongyangzhuan, which mainly focuses on the feature and writer of the book as well as the form and content of classic interpretation so as to pave the way for the discussion in upcoming chapters. The feature of the book requires that the interpretation must be narrative. With quite a few writers and being passed on with oral expressions only, it allows much room for re-creation. With the method of question-and-answering, Gongyangzhuan explores the implications of The Spring and Autumn Annuals, summarizes the examples in The Spring and Autumn Annuals, teaches lessons with words and describes historical facts, It should be realized that part of the value of the book lies in its narration.The second chapter is the narration with the method of interpretation. Since the main purpose of Gongyangzhuan is interpretation, the method of narration could better interpret classics and explain ideologies. The present chapter aims to analyze the three functions of narration in the interpretation: explaining in detail relevant historical events, explaining ideologies and making judgments.The third chapter focuses on the narrative features of Gongyangzhuan. With the comparison between Gongyangzhuan, Zuzhuan and Guliangzhuan from the aspects of narration structure, time, content and methods, this chapter aims to reveal the narrative feature of Gongyangzhuan. The narrative structure of the book is spotted narrative structure with the use of flashbacks, the method of conversations and the combination of fictions and nonfictions.The forth chapter mainly focuses on the fictionalized narration of the book. This chapter aims to analyze and exemplify the fictionalized narration from four aspects: legendary stories, contrasting characters, vivid detailed description and plain language.
