This paper mainly focuses on the current situation of packaging graphic design. By combing the existing theories of packaging graphic design methods, it criticizes the phenomenon of just “piling-up” and “collaging”, indicates the shortcomings of mechanically and restrictedly design and illustrates the design idea that the packaging graphic design should be based on three principal parts, that is, brand, commodity and customer. What's more, through analyzing the semantic connotation of “abstract packaging graphics”, the paper confirms that the abstract packaging graphics possesses the feature of “extracting the substantive characteristics”, and further denies the common views that consider it to be obscure or meaningless. After deep comparison between Western modern arts and abstract packaging graphics, the paper comes up with the similarities and distinctions between both. The paper also induces two application modes of abstract packaging graphics applied in packaging design with respective advantages. With practical designing experiments and detailed theories and procedures, the paper explains at length the application methods of abstract packaging graphic, how to choose the subject expressed by the graphics and how to determine the analogical “vehicle” that carries the subject by the application of metaphor. The paper further discusses the approaches of observation and expression of the “vehicle” through series of designing practices. At last, the paper concludes the constructive principles in the process of transforming graphic elements into graphic implications, which include the construction of element, the construction based on cognitive rules and construction in resonant appeals.
