In the context of globalization, simultaneous interpreting (SI) has been widely applied in television programs to immediately convey information. As an effective method to communicate economic, political and cultural content to audience, many high-quality television interview programs are employing SI.The characteristics of television interview programs, namely high-speed delivery, redundancy, unpredictability and improvisation make simplification skills necessary in interpreting. Previous studies mainly proposed the use of simplification skills based on Daniel Gile's Effort Model, the Frame theory and other models or theories from the perspective of the process of interpretation. However, this thesis focuses on the feedback and reactions of the audience, since TV programs'audience chooses information sources based on their needs and expectations. Thus, this thesis studies the feasibility of the use of simplification skills in TV interview programs and the relevance of satisfaction and the use of simplification skills from the perspective of the audience. Based on the Uses and Gratifications theory, a questionnaire survey was conducted to find out the uses, expectations, and extent of satisfaction of audience on different SI versions (with and without the use of simplification skills) and their major measurements. With the statistics collected from the survey, a few interviews were conducted in an attempt to understand the underlying reasons for certain patterns demonstrated by the survey results. Based on the survey results and interviews, this thesis aims to prove the feasibility of simplification skills in television interview programs. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One introduces the objectives and the background of the study. Chapter Two provides a literature review, presenting related studies of television interview program SI, its applicable simplification skills and Uses and Gratifications theory and its application, and pointing out the significance of the study. Chapter Three firstly presents the objectives, designs, and subjects of the survey and then provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis. Conclusions are drawn from the analysis: the use of simplification skills is contributing to audience's satisfaction and the form of delivery is also important to television audience's assessment of TV SI. Chapter Four summarizes the findings of this thesis, points out the limitations of the study and proposes suggestions for further studies.
