Chinese impromptu speeches can be challenging for simultaneous interpreters in that Chinese speakers may create redundancy, incomplete sentences and misleading messages in the speech. It will be more difficult to interpret when impromptu speeches with dense information are delivered at a high rate. In this case, SI interpreters should have a better understanding of the speech, follow the logic of the speaker, find key information, remove the redundancy and reformulate the information in English, in order to deliver the intended meaning of the speaker. Most of the current studies of SI in impromptu speeches focus on linguistic features and simplification skills, however, few explore information selecting and reformulation. Based on the Interpretive Theory of Translation and an empirical study of 8 SI students, this paper explores the information selecting and reformulation in Chinese-English SI of impromptu speeches, studies the correlation between the methods and quality of Chinese-English SI, hoping to provide some reference and guidance for future student training in Chinese-English SI.Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, some conclusions can be drawn: the more frequent the SI students select and reformulate information from the speech, the higher the quality of the Chinese-English SI is of; in the process of information selecting and reformulation, the SI interpreters may pause more often and create more blanks, thus affecting the quality of the SI. In conclusion, students should use such methods more often in their daily practice and find the balance between too many pauses and too much redundancy, in order to improve conciseness and overall quality of Chinese-English SI.
