Impromptu speech is a quite familiar to interpreters.Impromptu speech makers usually organize their language on the spot, thus creating strong colloquial features, such as ambiguity, redundancy, lack of coherence, logical confusion or even fallacies, mixed sentence patterns, etc. The difference between Chinese language and English and the colloquial features of impromptu speeches both raise challenges to simultaneous interpreting, especially for student interpreters who are less-experienced.This thesis aims to explore student interpreters' performance in the identification and selection of primary and secondary information and in using reorganization strategies when interpreting impromptu speeches.Based on the theories regarding primary and secondary information put forward by Gile and Viaggio and the previous research results, the author, through interpretation experiments, discusses the interpretation performance of student interpreters in the context of impromptu speech, including whether they can accurately distinguish primary and secondary information, and successfully complete interpretation tasks by adopting information reorganization strategies,as well as their mastery and awareness of using specific strategies,so as to summarize the advantages and problems of student interpreters in information processing. The results show that in simultaneous interpretation of impromptu speeches, student interpreters, unwilling to leave blanks, tend to inference on the content of the original speech, but sometimes adding wrong information. In the initial stage of interpretation study, student interpreters pursue the integrity of information and strive to interpret all the information to the audience, which also shows that they are less aware of extracting main information, compressing or omitting secondary information.According to this, the author puts forward some suggestions for student interpreters:first, they should actively distinguish primary and secondary information during interpretation;Second, they should strengthen the awareness and mastery of summarizing, compression and other strategies to reduce the output burden.Third, they can try text analysis training and retelling the main idea of the source language in the same language.
