A Translation Project Report On Discovering The Humanities (Chapter Ten)

This is a translation project report on Discovering the Humanities by Henry M Sayre, of which Chapter Ten The Counter-Reformation and the Baroque: Emotion, Inquire and Absolute Power is the source text. As a college textbook, it helps students feel the charm of humanities by tying together the entire cultural experience through a narrative storytelling approach, which can develop their abilities to find, analyze and solve problems. The purpose of this report is to analyze the translation of relevant textbooks and provide valuable reference and learning for Chinese students.This report consists of four parts. Part one is to briefly introduce the translation project, including its objectives, significance and structure of the report. Part two centers on the background of the source text, including an introduction to the author, publishing facts, main contents of the source text, and an analysis of the source text. Part three is the main part of this report. In this part, the translator focuses on the theoretical(Functionalist Skopos Theory) basis, translation difficulties and methods employed in the process of translation. Besides, translation approaches and techniques, such as: literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration, division, conversion and addition, are also discussed to deal with translating proper nouns and complex sentences. Part four concludes with the lessons learned from the translation practice and problems to be solved in the future.Having combined the translation theory and practice, this report analyzed and verified the application of relevant translation methods and strategies by examples. The translator hopes that it can provide some case reference and advice for similar textbook translation.
