A Report On The Translation Of Selected Chapters Of Almost English

This is a translation project for the first three chapters of Almost English written by Charlotte Mendelson.She has also created other works on family affections,such as Love in Idleness,Daughters of Jerusalem and When We Were Bad.The novel I have chosen is the fourth work which was long listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2013 and Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction in 2014.So far it has no Chinese version.The text adopts narrative style and is full of description on scene and psychology.Among them,there are some Hungarian words which add some foreign elements to the novel.AlmostEnglish not only depicts the family of Marina living in a place other than their hometown,but also describes her youthful rebellion against the expectations of her family.The Theory of Three Dimensions of Context is the main guidance of this project.Hatim and Mason proposed the theory,combined the context with register,pragmatics and semiotics,and put forward the three dimensions:Communicative Dimension,Pragmatic Dimension and Semiotic Dimension.In this novel,there are many scenes,descriptions and dialogues in source context among which some are difficult to translate,and this theory helps me analyze description from Communicative Dimension,dialogue from Pragmatic Dimension,and some information from Semiotic Dimension.The three dimensions of context are integrated with one another,and together they restrain the process of translation.This project is divided into five parts.The first part is the introduction.In this chapter,the writer introduces the project and the significance.The second part is the process of the project which includes the stage of preparation,translation,proofreading and modification.The third part consists of the advantages and bottlenecks under the Theory of Three Dimensions of Context.The fourth part is the case study.Here the translator analyzes the theory's influences on translation.And the fifth part is the conclusion which has the factors for translation and the experience of the translator.
