| This report mainly discusses the English translation of the tourism publicity text and its source text is excerpted from the rare travel book “This is Beijing” authored by Huo Chenxin. The book provides a detailed introduction on Beijing’s well-known tourist attractions, involving the geographical location, traffic conditions, ethnic customs and cultural deposits of those scenic spots. This translation practice is guided by the theory of Eco-Translatology put forward by Hu Gengshen. This theory considers the translational eco-environment not only as the collection of factors restricting translation activities, but as the premise and basis for adaptive selection of the translator to make the translation survive in the new ecosystem. The translation methods of Eco-Translatology are “three-dimensional” transformations, which relatively focuses on adaptive selection and transformation from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions under the principle of multi-dimensional adaptation and adaptive selection. The source text, belonging to the publicity text of tourism, has both informational function and vocative function.Guided by this theory, the translator discusses how to make the translation adapt to the target language by adaptive selections from three dimensions.Specifically, the translator uses amplification, omission, liberal translation and conversion in the linguistic dimension to solve the translation difficulties of four-character words and short sentences with scattered structures so that the information can be accurately transmitted. In the cultural dimension, transliteration with annotation and transliteration with free translation are used to solve the translation difficulties of culture-loaded words and proper nouns, thus demonstrating cultural connotation and spreading Chinese culture as much as possible. In the communicative dimension, the amplification and adaptation are used to solve the translation difficulties of non-subject sentences so that the communicative intention of the author can be restated to readers.A number of examples in this report fully demonstrate the feasibility of eco-translatology in guiding this translation practice. The translator believes that it will be a good try to adopt this theory developed in China to guide the translation of Chinese scenic spots. The translator hopes that the cases analysises in this report can be used as a reference for other translators to improve the translation quality of domestic tourism texts. |
