Autobiographies written to portray their heroes in a specific historical period can offer us fresh perspectives of a time and a social world. It inevitably covers historical background, names of figures and places and other culturally distinctive elements.Considering the disparity between source text and trget text culture, target text readers may encounter obstacles in the comprehension of these culturally rich terms. Therefore, measures should be taken to cope with the discrepancy of background knowledge between source text readers and target text readers. This thesis chooses to discuss the translation of of Self and Injustice which examines representative autobiographies of several individuals who were marginalized by New Order regime. It touches upon prestigious Indonesia leaders,a wide variety of political parties and religious groups in Indonesia. To be faithful to the source text and minimize the loss in translation in terms of informative, cultural and aesthetic functions, the translator should adopt compensation strategies accordingly. After reviewing theories on translation compensation proposed by both Chinese and western scholars, the thesis conducts an analysis of 18 examples based on translation practices with special attention paid to communicative, cultural and aesthetic dimensions and mainly employs footnote,in-text annotation and contextual amplification. Conclusion can also be drawn that contextual amplification should be given priority since it is integrated into the text without affecting the flow of the text.Furthermore,footnote,in-text annotation and contextual amplification should strive to be as concise as possible on condition that they can deliver necessary information.
