Proper nouns belong to a very special kind of vocabulary that we will always come across no matter which type of the English text we read. As to the translation of these proper nouns, scholars have put forward some principles including translating according to their conventional expressions. What's more, translators are also required to be armed with certain background knowledge and translation strategies of proper nouns in order to translate them in a way that target-language readers could understand what they refer to as clearly as possible.Translators through History is a book which has done a research about the world history and civilization from the perspective of translation. The book introduces different translators emerged in diverse historical periods from various countries in great detail; therefore, it can be regarded as one of the key references for learners who begin to touch upon western translation history. Since a large number of proper nouns such as names of people, names of places, names of organizations and so on are involved in Translators through History, to concisely translate these proper nouns becomes the main difficulty in rendering the original work. The thesis, taking Chapter 2 from this book as an example to classify proper nouns under the guidance of definitions given by the academia and their study achievements, discusses about how to apply theoretical translation strategies in practice as food for thought in the translation process of proper nouns.
