Terminology translation strategies in simultaneous interpretation (SI) refer to the ways interpreters use to overcome terminological difficulties in the message reconstruction phase. The strategies, if used properly, can improve accuracy and fluency of interpretation. However, few studies focus on terminological problems in interpretation, and the existing ones covered limited grounds. Rodriguez and Schnell (2009) categorize such problems and list 6 solutions, but they do not look at the strategies per se but at ways to adapt terminology work to the requirements of interpretation. Researchers in China study approaches to terminology translation in consecutive interpreting.Recent interpretation studies compare the performance differences between expert and novice/student interpreters. They involve experiments to confirm hypotheses and offer suggestions on how to improve teaching and studying in interpreter training programs. Following this approach, this thesis conducts an experiment on strategies used by expert and novice interpreters to solve terminology problems in SI from English into Chinese. The author finds that:a) Interpreters do use certain strategies to translate terminology in E-C SI. b) There is some correlation between the use of the strategies and the quality of interpretation. c) There are differences in the choice of strategies between the two groups of interpreters. Experts tend to actively and flexibly choose strategies for higher accuracy, fluency, adequacy and coherence. In summary, strategies are used for more effective interpreting and are a result of active listening, analysis and decision-making. Students, therefore, need to develop relevant professional expertise and do more field SI to acquire and test the skills.
