| Translation is a kind of cross-culture study which promotes commutation among different cultures. During the process of translation, translators would meet one common difficulty: how to express author`s thinking appropriately and smoothly. Among many translation methods, domestication and foreignization are often used by abroad and Chinese translators. There is a heated controversial topic between domestication and foreignization since these two terminologies came out. Domestication and foreignization are two important translation strategies. Foreignization focuses on source language and emphasizes its cultural characteristics, in other words, it requires translators to retain more exotic style of source language. However, domestication focuses on the culture of target language and it can help target reader to understand the culture characteristics of source language better. Domestication requires translators to express the writer`s ideas to target readers clearly. In terms of the source language style changing or not, foreignization emphasizes to keep its original style and domestication do not care about original style changing or not.This is a report based on the translation of excerpts from China to Chinatown-Chinese Food in the West, written by J.A.G. Roberts. In this book there are many long sentences, polysemies, inversions and passive voice. During the process of translation, I encountered much problems and difficulties, such as amounts of long sentences, unfamiliar and rare words, passive voice, and four character idioms. I have searched relevant information on the Internet and in the library. In order to lead the target readers to understand China to Chinatown-Chinese Food in the West better, domestication was adopted frequently. For the sake of faithfulness and smoothness in the translation excerpts, I analyzed and recombined long sentences and passive voice carefully to understand and translate its meaning appropriately. |
