The purpose of this report is to investigate the effect of keyword caption on students’ English-to-Chinese interpretation training. At present, many domestic and overseas studies find that there are different effects of keyword caption for interpreting learners with different language abilities in their English-to-Chinese interpretation. With twelve MTI masters who are from Foreign Language College of Shandong Normal University as the experimental subjects, this report aims to identify whether there is a positive effect of caption, especially keyword caption on beginners’ English-to-Chinese interpreting training who has a certain interpreting foundation. The author of this report focuses on the role of keyword caption in the English-to-Chinese interpretation. This report consists of two parts, quantitative research and qualitative research. Quantitative research refers to the experiment which divides the twelve students into four groups in random. Students from each group were given different ratios of keyword caption during their English-to-Chinese interpretation experiment. Qualitative studies provide supplementary and interpretation of data for quantitative research. In the qualitative part, all subjects who participate in quantitative experiment are given questionnaires. This is to investigate their opinions on the interpretation materials, keyword effects and the grade of difficulty level of the interpretation after the experiment. Six subjects who are selected from twelve participates are interviewed to answer four open-end questions.Through the analysis of the experimental data, the conclusion of this report shows that keyword caption can(1) improve the ability of information process of beginners majored in interpreting;(2) give interpreters some hint and eliminate their psychological anxiety and nervousness,(3) help interpreters get the important information and the theme of the audio material. Keyword caption plays an important positive role in the interpretation training for interpreting beginners with a certain English language foundation. The 40% keywords caption ratio mode has a better effect than the 20% caption ration and is almost equal to the same effect with full-caption. Comparatively 20% keywords caption ratio has no obviously positive effect on interpretation. Full-captions give interpreters crutch on sight comprehension rather than interpreting. |
