Zhang Meisun is one of the pioneering watercolor artists in China in the 20th century and foregoer in watercolor education. He dedicates his whole life to drawing from nature and creation of watercolor pictures. His watercolor pictures are varied in theme, reflecting the living environments and status before and after year 1949 fully. He advocates to be taught by nature, so his painting style is clear, pretty and easy, and colorful with one stroke, with suitable shades, characterized with remarkable national features. The thesis is set in the westward transmission of western sciences and Zhang Meisun’s watercolor art before and after the foundation of new China is combed from such aspects as artistic theme, artistic language, art and age, art and cultural environment to further make an initial study of some relationship of art language sinicization of watercolor and modern Chinese art history in the process of modern art in China.In our concept, watercolor was directly introduced from the West in the exchange of Chinese and Western culture in modern times or detoured to China from Japan, which synchronized with the history of the eastward transmission of western sciences. Missionary’s cultural infiltration and needs for commercial arts preluded propagation of western pictures. As time went by, represented by Zhang Meisun, a number of watercolor artists who achieved a lot in the early China made irreplaceable contributions to integration of Chinese and western modern arts in China. Their achievements and experience witnessed the important periods of Chinese watercolor from initiation, development and maturity, creating abundant deposits for development of watercolor.
