Zhang Zhao-xiang was an important artist in Beijing-Tianjin area in late Qing Dynasty, whose painting style has deeply influenced artistic circles in Tianjin. He also occupies an important position in modern painting history. His "Painting Book of Flowers and Poets" is appreciated by artistry collectors home and abroad. This paper systematically researched into the painting art of Zhang Zhao-xiang in five parts. Firstly, Zhang' s life story and friend circles were reviewed, in order to portrait the relation between his living conditions, social communications and environment at that time. Secondly, Zhang's painting style was exploited, and his learning origin, major works as well as reasons for establishing such a style were also deeply analyzed in this part. Thirdly, with comparison among the different painting styles of Zhang and other artists in his time, the characteristics of his painting and his status in painting history were further analyzed. Zhang's artistic achievements and his influences were discussed in the fourth part. The final part summarized literature collected, and arrived at relatively impartial and objective conclusions.
