A Practice Report On Translation Of The Tale Of Solomon Owl From English To Chinese

Fairy tale is one of the most important forms in children's literature. It is full of imaginary and vivid figures in fairy tale from the perspective of children. They are,therefore, loved by children. Since the May Fourth Movement, China has begun to introduce and translate foreign fairy tales. With the increasing development of globalization, more and more foreign works have been brought into China market which have created a colorful world for children and have broadened children's horizon.Reception theory has main focus on the role and position of readers in literary communications. It is a new method in the literary study. Two representatives of the theory are Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser. As a new force, the theory quickly swept across the European literary world. It entered into China in 1980 s.In this report, based on the reception theory, the author chooses The Tale of Solomon Owl as an example to illustrate the translation practice of fairy tale. Through analysis and discussion of strategies from lexical, syntactic and aesthetic perspectives without loss of its original childlike delight, the report consists of following parts:present situation of fairy tale translation, translation program introduction, translation process, translation case study and related limitations under the guidance of reception theory. Translator plays a very important role in the translation of fairy tales. At the last commentary part, the author discusses the translator's professional competence in the fairy tale translation and puts forward some suggestions on the translation practice for translators.
