The Influence Of Gender-counter Stereotype On Sexual Orientation Judgment

Sexual orientation refers to the individual lasting has the psychological or behavioral differences in preference on different gender. It is important for homosexual and heterosexual to identify other's sexual orientation accurately. Research at home and abroad has found that sexual orientation can be judged quickly and accurately from facial cues, but it is still cannot determine psychological mechanism when make judgment. This study aims to explore whether counter-gender stereotypes is the psychological mechanism when judge sexual orientation, and whether the use of counter-gender stereotypes can improve sexual orientation judgment accuracy, compares the accuracy and reaction time differences between homosexuals and heterosexuals, and compare whether homosexuals and heterosexuals difference in use of stereotypes in sexual orientation judgment task.In this study, 97 college students are recruited as the research subjects, and different gender temperament face image are selected as experiment material. The study tend to explore the accuracy and reaction time of sexual orientation judgment, Key findings are listed as follow:1.Participants can judge other's sexual orientation significantly higher than random probability, and homosexuals more accurately than heterosexuals do, but there was no significant difference between male and female, heterosexuals' sexual orientation are more likely to be identified accurately than homosexuals, but there is no significant difference between the male and female targets.2.There are exist gender counter- stereotype on sexual orientation judgment, gender counter- stereotype targets are more likely to be identified accurately than typically gender stereotype targets.3.The sexual orientation judgment accuracy to typically gender stereotype homosexuals is significantly lower than the gender counter- stereotype, the sexual orientation judgment accuracy to typically gender stereotype heterosexual is significantly higher than the gender counter- stereotype, no matter the targets are man or female.4.On sexual orientation judgment accuracy, there was no significant interaction between the participants' gender with the targets' stereotypes type, the same as the participants' sexual orientation and the targets' stereotypes type.5.Homosexuals take longer time than heterosexuals in judging task, but no significant difference. Male take longer time to judge sexual orientation than female significantly. And woman objects' sexual orientation is quicker judged than the male.6.Typical gender counter- stereotype targets' sexual orientation can be faster judged than the counter-gender temperament targets.7.On sexual orientation judgment reaction time, there was no significant interaction between the participants' gender with the targets' stereotypes type, but there was significant interaction the between the participants' sexual orientation and the targets' stereotypes type, for homosexuals, judgment on typically gender stereotype targets reaction time was significantly longer than the gender counterstereotype targets.
