With the entry into WTO and the deepening of reform and opening-up, China plays a more and more significant role in the world. As China's international status has been enhanced in a cosmic scale, an increasing number of tourists visit and invest in China. Jiangxi, as an important province in central China, is visited and invested by many foreigners. Poyang Lake, the biggest fresh water lake in China, is not only extremely important to the environment of Jiangxi, even for China at large, but also provides splendid scenery for people. The Poyang National Wetland Park is an international aquatic wild animal natural protection zone where many rare aquatic wild animals like Chinese sturgeon, finless porpoise live. Therefore, it is of great importance for us to protect the ecological environment of Poyang Lake.As more and more foreigners invest in China, the translation of laws serves as a bridge between foreign investors and Chinese business. Therefore, it takes a vital part in communication with the outside world. To arise the protecting awareness on the environment especially that of Poyang Lake, as well as build up an attractive image of China to attract more foreign investments, a good translation version of Environmental Protection Regulations of Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone will be definitely necessary. As an important theory in linguistic, Register Theory demonstrates the general principles of language varieties in different context of situation. It integrates the ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual meaning in language. Halliday(1978) points out that register are composed of three variables which are field, tenor and mode. Field is associated with the subject matter and setting of a discourse. Tenor indicates the relationship or status between the participants of the discourse such as casual style and intimative style. The mode of discourse refers to the role played by language in communication. Though Register Theory has been widely applied to many areas such as foreign language teaching, discourse analysis, few researches has focused on applying it to legal English translation. Legal English, as a special register, it has its own features in register which are embodied in the aspects of lexis, syntax, and grammatical structure. In this report, the author attempts to find out how to realize register equivalence in legal translation under the guidance of Register Theory. The translation text of Environmental Protection Regulations of Poyang Lake Eco-economic Zone should be both formal equivalent and functional equivalent to the source text. Through this research, the author tries to figure out the answers to the following questions, which are of great importance of the application of Register Theory to legal translation.1) According to Register Theory, how to realize the field equivalence in legal translation?2) According to Register Theory, how to realize the tenor equivalence in legal translation?3) According to Register Theory, how to realize the mode equivalence in legal translation?Through doing the research and providing some case studies, the author arrives at the following conclusions. Firstly, Register Theory is feasible in translation and of great significance to apply the register theory to the legal translation. Secondly, the realization of field, tenor and mode are embodied in different aspects. The field equivalence is reflected in the selection of lexis and syntax. The realization of tenor equivalence is embodied in the level of formality and impersonality of language. And mode equivalence can be realized by using the nominal structures. Thirdly, the three variables of register are not isolated but closely related to others. Only by integrating the three variables organically can the translation text realize the register equivalence to the source text.
