This Report is a translation practice project about Chinese tourist culture.This project is entrusted by the Poyang County Tourism Development Committee when the writer worked there as an intern.The project is to make foreign tourists know the long history of China through Chinese-English translation and then understand the profound Chinese culture.The translator selected A Day-Trip to the Poyang Lake as the original text which was edited and published by Poyang Lake National Wetland Park Tourism Development Company.Firstly,this report summarized the characteristics of the original text and under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the writer selected appropriate translation strategies to translate the tour manual of A Day-Trip to the Poyang Lake into English.Then,the translator analyzed the source text and the target text,pointed out the issues that should be concerned and the translation strategies that the Chinese-English translation of tourist texts should be adopted.Our translation practice and analysis indicated translation of tour manuals should be centered on foreign tourists and referred to the skopos rule of Skopos Theory as the primary principle.Thus,the target text can achieve the communicative purpose without deviating from the expression habits of the source text and the target language.In addition,the main strategies include firstly,the translation of names of scenic spots adopted transliteration and free translation to convey information of the source text and make foreign tourists learn more about the Chinese culture.Secondly,the translation of Chinese four-character idioms adopted omission in case that they would make foreign tourists confused and puzzled.Thirdly,the ancient poetry adopted compensation to convey its implied meanings to foreign tourists in the simplest language.Finally,in order to translate Chinese chronology and the names of historical celebrities and other Chinese expressions,it is appropriate to adopt the method of amplification to promote foreign tourists' full recognition of Chinese history,culture,customs,and so on.This report can be divided into five parts.In Chapter One,the translator analyzed the current situation of the Chinese tourism industry and the international development tendency,and pointed out the research background of the project.Moreover,the translator also analyzed the current situation of tourist texts translation at home and abroad;the translator proposed the unsolved problems in the translation of tourist textsand pointed out the objectives of the project as well.In Chapter Two,the translator described the whole translation process of A Day-Trip to the Poyang Lake,mainly including preparation,mid-translation,revision and review after translation.And then,the translator also made a simple summary of the case studies.In Chapter Three,the translator had a brief introduction to the theoretical framework–Skopos Theory which was the basis of this report,as well as its core concept.Moreover,the translator pointed out how to apply Skopos Theory and its theoretical basis in the translation of A DayTrip to the Poyang Lake.Depending on Skopos Theory and its three core principles,in Chapter Four,the translator analyzed and summarized the translation strategies and methods in the translation of A Day-Trip to the Poyang Lake by taking representative cases as the objects,and selected some typical cases in the target text to have case analysis.In Chapter Five,the translator ended the whole thesis with a summary of the whole translation process,the target text and the case analysis in chapter four.Finally,the translator generalized the core findings and expectations of this thesis and pointed out the shortcomings which should be improved in future.
