A Report On The Translation Of Eat Pray Love (Excerpts)

This is a report on the translation of the chapters 37-46 of Eat Pray Love, written by American author Elizabeth Gilbert. The translation is completed under theoretical guidance of the domestication strategy.The source text,10 chapters selected from Eat Pray Love, shows the trip of the author across Italy, India and Indonesia after her divorce and everything she discovered during travels. During four months in Italy, the author relaxed and enjoyed the life (eat); during three months in India, she found her spirituality (pray); and finally in Indonesia, she achieved the "balance" and fell in love with a businessman (love). The novel remained on The New York Times Best Seller List for 187 weeks.Considering the translation version's readability and secondary position of Chinese in the translation field, the domestication strategy, put forward by Lawrence Venuti in The Translators'Invisibility, is adopted as the guiding rule. During the translation, liberal translation is the main translation method, and other translation methods including conversion, annotation, passive transformation, addition, omission and the like are used.The report is divided into five parts:introduction; translation procedure description; translation methods introduction; translation cases and conclusion. In the first chapter, background, details, target readers and report structure of the translation project description are introduced. In the second chapter, preparation, process and revision of the translation project are elaborated. In the third chapter, how the domestication strategy and the foreignization strategy adopted in the translation process is expounded:related theoretical explanation, research and application of domestication strategy; the reasons to apply domestication in translation; and necessity and usage of foreignization strategy. In the forth chapter, concrete translation cases are cited to show how the author applies the domestication and foreignization strategies to solve the cross-cultural problems. In this part, the way that the translation combines with the theory is fully described, and the techniques solving the lexical, grammatical and textual difficulties are presented. Lastly, the fifth chapter is the conclusion of the translation gains and limitations.
