A Study Of E-C Translation Of Financial News Headlines From The Perspective Of Memetics

As the economic tie between different countries in the world becomes increasingly close,many human activities are closely linked to the economy and financial news has already become a window through which people can grasp the trend of world economy and trade.Regular reading of world financial news not only helps business people make wiser decisions and better develop their own business,but also serves as a guide to investment and financing for common people.Accordingly,the translation of English financial news comes to the fore.As the eye of the financial news,the headline is the most important factor that attracts peoples’ attention,whose translation is worth exploring at the same time.This thesis studies the E-C translation of financial news headlines under the guidance of memetic theory.Based on the meme lifecycle theory,the author constructs a tentative memetic model for the translation of financial news headlines and explores the specific translation process of financial news headlines,which is divided into five different phrases.Among these five phases in translation,the author mainly focuses on the most two important phases,decoding and encoding.And then the author makes a detailed analysis of the factors that exert great influence on these two phases,the linguistic factor and cultural factor.Within the framework of memetics,the translation process of financial news headlines is a process to create strong financial news headline memes in the target culture.In the encoding phase,five criteria are chosen to select strong financial news headline memes based on Heylighen’s selection criteria for strong memes.Finally,the author concludes and makes an annotation on the translation strategiesused in the encoding phrase.The mainly used translation strategy is analogy,under which there are four subcategories,direct coping existing strong memes,applying homophones with existing strong memes,borrowing the structure of strong memes,and using the associative meaning of strong memes by implanting them in a different context.
