| The source text Economics: The Basics is written by Tony Cleaver. The book was first published in 2004 and the second edition came out in 2011. The second edition was added two new chapters—the first and the second chapter. The research report is based on the new chapters.The demand for translation of economic informative texts is increasing, while the translation studies on this kind of texts aren't enough. It is imperative for Chinese translators to study translations of such texts. In the past, translation skills and techniques of economic informative texts provide experience from macro-level, but rarely look into the micro-level methods. This essay provides pragmatic techniques based on the first and second chapter.Economics: The Basics is a typical economic text. It uses lots of economic terms and long sentences with complicated structures to express information. Guided by functionalist translation theory, translator needs to make advantage of variety of translation skills to ensure the accuracy of translation, such as division and amplification. As there exists a big difference in the expressive habits, ways of thinking and cultural background between the East and the West, translators should bear the three points in mind during the process of translation.Guided by functionalist translation theory, the translator analyzes difficulties encountered in the translation process in term of lexicon, syntax and texture with cases. Therefore, by taking advantage of various techniques like conversion and reconstruction, the translator can transmit accurate messages to Chinese readers.During the translation, the translator will sum up the procedures of translating terms and strategies of translating sentences to offer some advice in this regard. |
