A Practice Report On Category Shift In Chinese Translation Of “Business Life”column Articles In Financial Times

The process of translation is usually summarized as understanding and expression.How to give an accurate conveying of the information in the source language is the top priority to expression,especially for news translation.In the meantime of the maximal conveying the information of the source text,the clear and coherence of the translated text should be emphasized to meet the means of expression of the target readers.However,in most cases,it is hardly to achieve the absolute equivalence between English and Chinese.Thus,formal transformation is common phenomena in translation.Based on the Chinese translation practice of “Business Life” Column articles in Financial Times,with the guidance of Catford’s category shift theory,the practice report analyzes the translation shifts in the translation process from the level of vocabulary,syntax,language structure and cultural expression,and explores the application of the strategies of category shift.Aiming at the four difficulties and problems found in the process of translation:non-equivalence of parts of speech,incongruity of language structure,deviation of the language structure and the differences of cultural expression between English and Chinese,this practice report discusses respectively the effectiveness of category shift of part of speech,category shift of structure,category shift of units and category shift of flexibility.The case analysis and the practice summary indicate that the strategies under category shift have certain guiding significance and practice value for the translation of this kind of texts.
