News is a window to the world. As one of the most internationally influential journals,The Economist attracts a large number of readers with high-quality reports, deep insights and international perspectives. The Economist, undoubtedly, not only allows people to grasp international hot spots, but also provides us an opportunity to view China from various perspectives as well as an introspective mechanism to learn from the West.Taking The Economist as the translation material, the translator analyzed 84 reports from China column issued in April to October,2020,aiming to explore the content and tendency of this magazine’s report on China issues. In face of Western media reports,we should cognize images of China in an objective way,so that China can stand on the international stage with a more positive image. The translator selected 10 related reports from China column issued in April to October,2020 as the translation text, totaling 12,375 Chinese characters, which meets the requirements of translation practice.Having compared several translation theories, the translator selected Nida’s functional equivalence theory to guide the practice of translation.According to Nida, translation consists of two principles: accuracy and reader-orientedness.The Economist is an information-based text, expressing the accuracy of information and focusing on readers’ feelings. On the one hand, the translation should follow the principle of faithfulness and smoothness;on the other hand,it should reflect the personality and characteristics of news report. The translator first learned about the text types and characteristics of the translated materials through network resources and paper books, and then analyzed the characteristics of The Economist from language, content and the tendency of viewpoints.Combining the theory of functional equivalence and referring to relevant literature, the translator mainly analyzed the information at the lexical level and syntactic level. The translator made detailed explanations in the case analysis section to explore the best way to solve the difficulties in the translation of The Economist. This thesis made an analysis of the corresponding translation strategies to achieve functional equivalence between the source language and the target language.Several translation strategies are mainly used, such as part of speech conversion,four-character idioms, adding and subtracting, dividing and co-translating,adjusting sentence order, passive voice translation.Through the translation practice of the “China column” of The Economist, the translator aims to let people understand the construction of the image of China by the western media in the special period after the COVID-19,and she finds that translation is not only an equivalent conversion between two languages, but is also affected by the ideological and cultural differences between two countries. |
