Significance And Enlightenment Of “Space Of Flows” On Modern Art

"Space of Flows " is a specific concept on the development of network society proposed by Manuel Castells. It comes from chapter six of “THE RISE OF THE NETWORK SOCIETY”, one of the " Trilogy " book. As a new space form produced under the impetus of information technology during the process of globalization, this concept is proactive, creative, and enlightening to the development of contemporary art. As a new social form in the process of transformation, space of flows is also filled with uncertainty and possibility. In the network society with rapid development of information and technology, the impacts of social form and economic model transformation are spreading to all aspects. The development and popularization of Internet also brings new ideology and operation mode to all walks of life in the meantime. This paper attempts to take the concept of " Space of Flows" as main point, to analyze the relationship between contemporary art and network society, as well as the impacts and opportunities faced by contemporary artists in the transformational society. How to face the impacts and grasp the opportunities, is also an inevitable problem in the development of contemporary art. The paper aims at combing and summarizing related concepts of "Space of Flows" in network society,combining with the special context of rapid economic development and dramatic values revolution in China, briefly analyzes the influence and enlightenment of "Space of Flows" on the development of contemporary art, and integrating with the individual creative practice, specific thinking on related issues is unfolded.
