The thesis does some textual research on seventeen groups of cognate words of phonogram in Shuowenjiezi, so as to discuss the phenomenon of phonogram's phonetic symbol source tracking. In addition, we study some cognate words which own different phonetic symbols but same or similar pronunciation and meanings.The thesis is composed of four parts. The preface, its main contents include four aspects. The first is to review the history of the study on the character families and cognate words. They mainly trace specific cases to discuss the theory and method of cognate words of phonogram study. The second is to present the studying target and purpose. The third is to present the studying means. We apply documentary research method, qualitative analysis method and so on. The forth is to present the studying value. This study provides basic material for cognate words of phonogram research, promotes the further study of the theory of phonetic symbol source tracking, collation of ancient books and finding meanings from sound. Chapter 2, eight groups of character families. We apply the theory of phonetic symbol source tracking to analyze family words in Shuowenjiezi. It combines the Chinese characters which pronunciations origins are similar together and discusses the relationships between phonogram original meanings and characters. Chapter 3, eight groups of cognate words. It combines and analyzes some cognate words which own different phonetic symbols but same or similar pronunciation and meanings. Conclusion, discusses the further understanding of the terms of the etymological meaning, the original meaning, character families and cognate words. Moreover, it points out the weaknesses of this thesis.
