Director Yan Hao, one of the pioneers in Hong Kong New Wave cinema movement, moved to Mainland China to shoot a series of films closely related to mainland culture after the movement, and won several awards in Hone Kone. Taiwan and international film festivals. At his beginning years, Yan Hao directed typical Hong Kong films; but later he searched for materials in the mainland and directed films of different styles as his former ones, and was thus called an art film director.With the vigorous development of the current domestic film market, more and more Hong Kong and Taiwan directors and even foreign directors are coming to mainland to co-produce films, so it is necessary to observe and study the creation process of director Yan Hao who has been a pioneer of co-produced films, as well as to explore his understanding of the traditional mainland culture and his usage of Chinese elements, therefore to reveal the creation of his personal value and its significance of the current film industry.Although director Yan Hao won a lot of awards in the last century, but the study of his creation process and film content is not perfect,so as the study of his attemption and practice in film industry. In this paper, the films of Yan Hao are taken as the research object. The study focuses on his characteristics of the mainland culture that reflects in his cultural connotation and the concept of theme, and analyses the narrative strategy and the different exploration he have made, and reveals the artistic value and commercial value of director Yan Hao. This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter discusses the Chinese culture which is reflected in his films. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of the Chinese cultural elements, which are based on the two aspects of narrative strategy. The third chapter focuses on the analysis of the aspects of narrative strategy and the image and music style. The fourth chapter is intended to summarize the director's personal creation characteristics and enlightenment that his creation method brings to the current Chinese moviedom.
