A Translation Report Of LIN YUTANG-Astride The Cultures Of East And West

This thesis is based on the translation of a biographical text. The source text, LIN YUTANG-Astride the Cultures of East and West, is chosen from the third volume of Salt and Light series written by Dr. Carol Lee Hamrin and Stacey Bieler. In this paper, the writer analyzes the features and the type of the source text and puts forward translation methods under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation strategies.According to the report, application of semantic translation can ensure completeness of information and maintain language features of the source text. Therefore, taking account of the features of biographical text, translation methods, including adding, transliteration plus explanation are used to keep the exact contextual meaning of the source text and make the translation concise and easy to understand. Besides, according to communicative translation, full consideration should be given to target readers' comprehension and response. Therefore, interpretating and recasting are adopted to maintain the accuracy of historical information, so that the objective of communication is achieved.
