This paper examines the relationship among shame, self-acceptance, social avoidance and distress, and the mediation effect of self-acceptance between shame and social avoidance distress in the students of Grade Ten(the first grade of high school).The aim of this study is to raise the mental health level in the students of Grade Ten, and provide a basis for their smoothly completing high school life. Shame Scale, Self-acceptance Scale, Social Avoidance and Distress scale were used in this investigation,and a random sample of the 235 students of Grade Ten participated this survey in Baoding Foreign Language High School. The results are as follows.1. The score of self-acceptance is close to the medium level, the score of shame is less than the medium level, and the score of the social avoidance and distress status is significantly higher than medium level.2. There was no significant difference in the factor of gender and the only child or not on the whole scale and its subscale of self-acceptance. There was significant difference in self assessment, which the urban students was higher than the rural students. There was no significant difference of the students’ origin of student on the whole scale and its subscale of shame, however, there are significant in gender on the factor of personality of shame,which shows that the boy’s score is significantly higher than the girl’s in shame personality factor, and the only children score is significantly higher than non-only children’s in ability shame. The girl’s score is significantly higher than the boy’s in social avoidance and distress, and no difference in gender and the only child or not.3. The factors of the social avoidance and distress scale were negatively correlated with the shame scale. The social avoidance and distress has a positive correlation with self-acceptance. The factors of self-acceptance scale have significant negative correlations with the factors of shame scale(p<0.01).4. Shame has a negative prediction on social avoidance and distress(6.9% variance), and self-acceptance has positively predicted effect to social avoidance and distress(24.1% variance), shame of self-acceptance and anguish have negative predictive function(28.6% variance), and all the significance level are below 0.001.5. Self-acceptance shows a perfect mediation effect between shame and social avoidance- distress, and the ratio of mediation effect to total effec was 97%.Conclusion: the students of Grade Ten social avoidance and distress need to be improved; there is a close relationship of shame, self-acceptance and social avoidance; self-acceptance shows a perfect mediation effect between the shame and social avoidance – distress. According to the results of this study, it is suggested that school should take active measures to improve the mental health of senior students. Suggestions are as follows:(1) School should pay more attention to social avoidance behavior and distressing experience of students, especially of the girls;(2) School should prevent students’ high levels of personality shameness from lower self-esteem;(3) School should improve students’ self cognitive ability, enable them to objectively evaluate themselves;(4) School should make efforts to high school students’ mental health education, and establish a peer counselor team which led by professional mental health teachers;(5) Establish self-acceptance team of educators. Highly focus is to help students improve the level of self-acceptance, stimulate the sense of shame, reduce social avoidance behavior and social misery experience, and it is positive for mental health education to improve the level of self-acceptance in high school.
