Chinese documentary came into being more than one hundred years ago. Having gone through the traditional media era, the development of Chinese documentary has entered a new media age. Due to the changes of media, the development path of Chinese documentary has changed as well. In the past, both the production and broadcasting of Chinese documentary are controlled by traditional media. However, the new media age is featured by the participation of new media platforms. With “new media” and “Chinese documentary” as the research objects and “the influence of new media platforms on Chinese documentary” as the topic, the paper tries discussing the impact of the appearance of new media platforms on Chinese documentary and the new characteristics of Chinese documentary presented through new media platforms.In order to clearly explain the influence of new media platforms on Chinese documentary, referring to the five elements of the “5W Model” put forward by Lasswell, the paper successively analyzes in its key chapters the influence of new media platforms on Chinese documentary in five aspects, namely production subjects, content, audience, communication channel and communication effect.The whole paper consists of seven chapters. The first chapter explains the paper’s research significance, innovation points, research status, research content, research methods etc. The second chapter briefly introduces the meaning of features of traditional media and new media. The motivation of production of Chinese documentary in the traditional media era is analyzed from four perspectives, namely politics, economy, culture and science. Besides, the paper also probes into changes happened to the motivation of production of Chinese documentary in the new media age. The third chapter explains the impact of new media platforms on the production subject of Chinese documentary. The fourth chapter discusses how new media platforms affect the content and topic selection of Chinese documentary. The fifth chapter discusses the audience of Chinese documentary on new media platforms and the communication channels, means and effects different from those of traditional media. The sixth chapter presents problems and bottlenecks encountered by Chinese documentary on new media platforms. In the last chapter, the author puts forward relevant suggestions and measures.
