Chinese idioms are a kind of idiomatic phrases which exist in the daily oral conversations massively in a brief form with an interesting and profound content. Chinese idioms has lay a heavy burden on overseas students to learn Chinese because of its dual meaning, hence it has become an important and difficult point in teaching Chinese as a second language.Based on previous studies, it has chosen the semantic transparency as the break point to know the situation of overseas students Chinese idioms comprehending through the way of questionnaire to 121 overseas students who learn Chinese in Universities in Guangzhou area. The specific steps of this study are: to analyze the results in the both two aspects of statistics of the accuracy and the type of obstructive options on the background of semantic transparency; To investigate how the semantic transparency of Chinese idioms influence the overseas students comprehending them in different conditions considering of the characteristics of the students, which include three different aspects: analysis of the situation in a comprehensive way depending on the level of semantic transparency, analysis of the particular cases depending on mastery condition of overseas students, and analysis according to the Chinese level of overseas students.At last it has given some teaching suggestions to Chinese idioms teaching of overseas students based on the findings of this study on teaching contents, teaching strategies and teaching methods.
