This thesis discusses the effect of transparency on understanding of Chinese idioms of Chinese learners of Korea, and the effect of transparency on the uses of strategies of understanding-Chinese idioms. 40 Korea subjects participate in this study. Their Chinese proficiency is intermediate and advanced. This study adopts oral report to test 20 subjects' understanding of idioms in sentences. It adopts written report in Chinese or Korean to test the other 20 subjects' understanding of idioms in sentences. The former 20 subjects are randomly selected as experimental group. The latter 20 subjects are randomly selected as control group. The results of the experiment indicate that the transparency significantly affects subjects' understanding of idioms and their uses of strategies. Idioms with higher transparency are easier to understand than those with lower transparency. Six strategies of understanding idioms are found in this study. They include sentence contexts, literal meanings, repeations of reading, asking for information, native language and background knowledge. Among them, sentence contexts, literal meanings, repeations of reading, and asking for information are significantly affected by transparency. So this paper suggests that Chinese teachers use these strategies to help Chinese learners master Chinese idioms in the Chinese-as-second-language teaching.
