Chinese idioms, crowned as a part of the essence of Chinese culture, belong tothe category of idiomatic phrases. As they reflect in a concise and profound waypeople’s cognition, thoughts and value systems, many of which have a long historyand deep cultural background and connotations, a majority of foreign learners ofChinese have the enthusiasm for the idioms while they also feel fearful in the courseof learning because of frequent deviation of understanding. The ultimate purpose ofJapanese and Korean students is to successfully and freely communicate. SinceChinese idioms are quite frequently applied in daily communication process, it isespecially necessary for them to learn idioms systematically.This article observes and studies100most frequently used idioms which areselected from25TCSL(Teaching Chinese as a Second Language) textbooks. Thenwith the help of questionnaire, the idioms are classified according to their semantictransparency. Next the author surveys some intermediate and advanced Japanese andKorean students and employs both static and dynamic methods of investigation, tryingto analyze the influence of semantic transparency on the understanding and theacquisition of idioms of foreign students. Finally on the basis of the formerconclusions, this article seeks to research the teaching of Chinese idioms based onsemantic transparency and to provide some teaching suggestions as well.The thesis can be divided into five chapters.Chapter1: In this chapter, the thesis provides some basic information includingthe researching purpose and the value of doing so. It also summarizes the previousrelevant studies.Chapter2: In this chapter, the thesis introduces the definition and features ofidioms and their semantic transparency. It also explains the criteria of selecting theidioms. Then the thesis illustrates the detailed classification of the selected100idiomsaccording to the survey of semantic transparency.Chapter3: In this chapter, on the basis of the classified idioms, the authors takesa further step to design and do two types of questionnaire, the subjects limited to theintermediate and advanced foreign students from Japan and Korea. The first type is astatic one, which records the familiarity of the100selected idioms to foreign students,while the second type is used mainly to test their ability to master Chinese idioms. Then the author employs EXCEL and SPSS for the analysis and research of the dataand intends to figure out the relationship between semantic transparency andfamiliarity, the relationship between semantic transparency and the mastery of idiomsand the possible factors that contribute to the acquisition of idioms for foreignstudents. The author finally generalizes the students’ strategies in understandingChinese idioms through oral interview.Chapter4: In this chapter, the thesis provides some teaching principles andcontents and proposes some feasible teaching methods in TCSL with some examplesin order to give some suggestions for the current state of the teaching of idioms.Chapter5: in this chapter, the thesis provides a brief summary and proposessome limitations and inadequacies.
