GRE, hosted by American ETS, is a prerequisite to all applicants for American or Canadian postgraduate degree, and it is also a significant criterion for professors to evaluate whether the applicant can be given the scholarship or not. Along with the deepening of the globalization, an increasing number of Chinese students aspire to study abroad. Therefore, GRE has become a heated examination to domestic students, who regard “GRE” as “God's Reading English”. As for the reading section of GRE, it is mainly excerpted from American latest academic papers of Journal Science, including natural science,bioscience, social science and literary criticism, aiming to inspect students' comprehension of the structure and the theme of the articles.This paper is a report on the E-C translation practice, which is a feasibility study on translating the reading section of GRE under the guidance of Functional Translation Theory. It is composed of four parts. Part one is a brief introduction to the background, characteristic and significance of this translation project; Part two makes a summary record to the whole process,including the preparation of the translation, the selection of theory, translation itself as well as proofread work; Part three is the case study, which makes an detailed elaboration on three aspects, texture, sentence structures, and professional terms and explores the strategies used in the translation under the guidance of Functional Translation Theory. In part four, the author makes a summary and reflection on the translation practice, pointing out that Functional Translation Theory is of realistic significance to the translation of the reading section of GRE, and attempts to evoke peers' s reflection.
