The popular science reading,which is designed to popularize technological knowledge,features scientificity,literariness,popularity and entertainment.It serves as a bridge between ordinary readers and science.However,a large number of popular science readings in China are introduced from overseas,so the translation work is particularly necessary if we are to make them available to Chinese readers.For this reason,this translation report will analyze features of popular science readings according to the translation practice of User Unfriendly(excerpts),and discuss its translation strategies on the basis of functional equivalence theory.The book User Unfriendly aims to probe into the relationship between human and technology with automobile the center of the author's study.Translation of this book will be valuable for Chinese readers who learn American culture or history of technology,and will trigger our thinking on the modern technology.This translation report consists of four parts: the first part introduces the content of the book and its research significance.The second part describes the translation process,including the pre-translation preparation,the analysis of popular science readings and functional equivalence theory as well as its application.The third part is case analysis,where the translator illustrates translation strategies of popular science readings under the guidance of functional equivalence.The fourth part is a conclusion of this report.The crux of achieving readability is to use idioms and four-character phrases to make the expression more Chinese.
