The application of material in sculpture creation is unavoidable. Material is not only related to the language message of the pattern, but also related to proper artistic performance. Besides, it can also reflect the subtle emotional relationship between writers and their works.Under the premise of expressing the spiritual connotation, there are two kinds of different art creation ways. One is to use known materials through design and complete inner ideas, the other is to start with materials and extend to new ideas and understandings, among which the former is based on the established grammar of traditional materials, while the latter is biased towards the new syntax of known materials, as well as the discovery of new texture language around. Compared with traditional creation steps, the dialogue with materials is conducive to carry out experimental creation, which can not only release the creator's feelings, but also benefit the integration of new knowledge and new ideas, to complete the externalization process of humanistic thoughts.Taking paper clay as the main material, the author carried out a research on the process of material cognition. Since 2014, she has completed more than 20 pieces of sculpture, which include the combination of synthetic materials such as wood, iron and steel, fiber, plastic and other materials, and involve in the consideration of daily life, female identity, cosmological space-time, religious myths and so on. In this process, the author explored the characteristics and performance of the texture of paper clay, enriched the intrinsic meaning of her works through its texture language, and integrated the feelings into material cognition. While expressing self emotion, the author further understood the promotion of texture in the growth of past artists, so as to be clearer about the energy conversion relationship between concept generation and material expression.Adopting the methods of literature review, experience summary, interdisciplinary research and exploratory research, this paper can be divided into three parts in the whole: the first part will discuss the relationship between ideological cognition and texture and explain how the energy was transferred between them. First of all, she will point out the defining range of the material, namely, the concept not equivalent to raw materials, as well as the complementary relationship with emotion, then outline the relevant attributes showed by texture language in the artistic creation, and finally enumerate some examples, including Joseph Beuys, Bjorn Norgaard, Niki de Saint Phalle and so on, to show how the artists enrich works and perfect personality through material in practice. The second part will start with its own practice. First of all, she will describe the process of discovering paper clay, then analyze the characteristics and performance of paper clay, and finally further illustrate how the material promotes personal philosophy combined with her creation. The third part will do a complete report of her thoughts through the final graduation creation in order to illustrate the interaction between individual ideas and materials profoundly.
