As an important branch of Chinese traditional folk art, clay sculpture shows high artistic value. Thus studies on it will not only deepen our understanding about some main achievements in the history of arts and crafts, but also help people know more about creation styles and aesthetic tendency in different districts.Xiao Guo clay sculpture is one of the important Chinese traditional folk arts whose main values lie in historic and humanity meaning, aesthetic appreciation as well as practical application. Among these values, I think its artistic value is the fundamental one from which other values stretch. And its artistic value mainly lies in exterior technique and internal implication. Technique means the modeling concept, formation and skills of clay sculpture, while implication means disposition, spirits, connotation and cultural meaning, which is also the internalization of techniques. Xiao Guo clay sculpture tends to use simplest local materials to create vivid people,plants, animals or even supernatural beings with simplest tools. The modeling of these works goes free in shapes and colors, not only emphasizing resemblance in unlikeness, but also avoiding mechanical application of real life. Just like the saying concluded by old artists, in opera making, images and clothing of Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, and Chou must be paid attention to as in animal making to the images of chicken, dogs, cattle and horses. In a word, Xiao Guo clay sculpture emphasizes simplicity, directness and generalization both in technique and in implication without any mincement or ornament. Besides, much of its importance are not attached to details, but to the artistic effect brought by implication instead of direct expression. In this way not only are time and materials saved but also flow-line production is avoided, which will both protect the environment and the originality of art creation. However, with the affect of multiple culture and modern toys, Xiao Guo clay sculpture is being gradually left out almost to be in the situation of dying out. Based on this condition, it’s urgent to save and inherit this art.The author of this thesis, as a clay sculpture major, focuses the attention on traditional manual techniques and the sculpture language of Xiao Guo clay sculpture, especially its enlightenment significance on modern sculpture.At present, affected by western concept, action and installation art, modern sculpture in China attaches most of the importance to idea telling,culture pertinence and facing social problems while neglects the significance of ways of expression. Regarding abandoning sculpture approaches as a sign of advancement, they will be sure to be abandoned by their own field sooner or later. Besides, there is another crisis in this field that professional characteristics are being weakened and concept and action are being over emphasized, because some vanguard art propaganda of new idea and new thoughts makes sculpture and paining not what they were. With the development and its increasing position of our country in the world, cultural soft power is attached great value to and being culturally confident is one of most important issues Chinese think highly of. As to the field of sculpture, what sculptors need to do is to put the focus on local culture study. On this question, the author holds that it is a good point of penetration to full dig out the traditional manual techniques and the sculpture language of Xiao Guo clay sculpture toys in Linyi district. Based on this thought, this thesis gives a full analysis to the sculpture language of Xiao Guo clay sculpture and elaborates its enlightenment to modern sculpture from the angles of its entity quality, simplicity, conciseness, eternity and the principle of carving and molding. That is also where its realistic significance lies and thus it connects Xiao Guo clay sculpture and modern sculpture languages well. Through this way,our traditional folk art will not only release more freshness in the worldwide multiple sculpture art area but also bring radical reform to modern Chinese sculpture. In addition, with the full understanding about its artistic value, the author also tries to explore industrialization of Xiao Guo clay sculpture, based on the new situation, expecting this kind of sculpture will maintain its cultural vitality by means of using its artistic value.
