A Study On The Words And Phrases About Geographical Names In The Travels Of Hsu HSia-KO

This thesis is base on lexicon of focuses on the Words and Phrases about geographical names in The Travels of Hsia-Ko written by Xu Hongzu of Ming Dynasty as the major research corpora and the words and phrases about geographical names as the object of study, combined with Chinese lexicology, grammar and linguistic theories, based on the comprehensive classification, analysis and comparative study of the words and phrases about geographical names in The Travels of Hsia-Ko.The paper first makes an exhaustive retrieval and statistics of the words and phrases about geographical names in The Travels of Hsia-Ko and a specific classification of them. Then based on the corpora that have been retrieved and using the research theories of the modern Chinese lexicology, the paper analyzes the word-formation structures of the words and phrases about geographical names in The Travels of Hsia-Ko and gets the common elements of the lexical structures of different languages, that's, the words and phrases about geographical names in The Travels of Hsia-Ko developed from monosyllabic words to disyllabic words, and word formation from single morpheme words to compound words. All these conform to one of the features of the vocabulary development. Compared with the words and phrases about geographical names in Commentary on the Waterways Classics, the synchronic analysis concludes that the general names of the geographical names in The Travels of Hsia-Ko are in classification. In terms of the number of syllables, monosyllabic words decreased, disyllabic words increased and polysyllabic words came into being. Most of the word formations were official. At last, the paper uses the cultural linguistic knowledge and a case analysis of the words and phrases about geographical names in The Travels of Hsia-Ko to explain how they reflected the socio-cultural values.
