The Phenomenon Of Misunderstanding The Image Description “Devoted Wife And Beautiful Mother” In Works By Female Writers During The May Fourth Period

There were two different positions in the image of “devoted wife and beautiful mother”created by May Fourth female writers.Some writers,such as Bing Xin and Chen Hengzhe,tend to create a new type of imagine about “devoted wife and beautiful mother” as balancing between family and career.While other writers,such as Lu Yin and Ling Shuhua,tend to deny the imagine about “devoted wife and beautiful mother ” in housebound by getting rid of the old custom,which represent female writers passively create that image;this attitude is representative among enlightened elites during that period.We discover the bias from May Fourth female writers exist in understanding the image “devoted wife and beautiful mother”praised by the traditional Chinese culture.What's more,it contains their fierce irrational understanding and extreme era emotion.The thesis summarize the historical evolution process of the previous research and content about the image “devoted wife and beautiful mother” according to amphoteric work distribution in ancient Chinese society,and the cultural background of establishing the concept“devoted wife and beautiful mother”.The thesis also summarize the passive understanding about the image “devoted wife and beautiful mother” through taking novel text from female writers during the May Fourth period as example;as well as their aspects of creating the image“devoted wife and beautiful mother”: housekeeper,fertility tool,puppet,doll suffering from traditional social restraints.In the final part,the process of misunderstanding the image“devoted wife and beautiful mother” is represented by evaluating these original meaning criticized by enlightened elites: the three cardinal guides and the five constant virtues,three Obediences and four Virtues,and a Woman without Talent Is Virtuous.Meanwhile,the reason of misunderstanding the image description “devoted wife and beautiful mother” has been analyzed through three aspects: society,individual,and writer's personality;and their era background and psychological basis have been presented.
