The thesis is a report on the translation of the book entitled Making Your Case:The Art of Persuading Judges(2008), coauthored by Antonin Scalia and Bryan A. Garner. The book is a legal commentary providing advice on how to persuade judges. As a book dealing with legal matters, it lacks formality and is conversational in style with vivid expressions. The thesis consists of altogether five chapters. Chapter 1 describes the background and significance of the translation task, the introduction of the source text, and the structure of the thesis. Chapter 2 provides a brief description of the three stages of the translation process--preparation before translation, the translation process and subsequent work. Chapter 3 reviews the communicative translation theory by Peter Newmark which is the theoretical basis for the translation, and its application to the present translation task. Chapter 4 addresses the difficulties and solutions in translation from three aspects: legal words, idioms and metaphors. And chapter 5 points out the unsolved problems and sums up inspirations for future practice.
