Invitation to Law & Society: An Introduction to the Study of Real Law is a work of scholarship that reveals what law is from the perspective of sociology of law.As legal writing, the book uses many long sentences and figures of speech to convey the idea to the readers. It falls into the category of informative text proposed by Peter Newmark(1916-2011).The author of this thesis conducts the analysis of the texts according to Newmark's Text-types Theory, and then uses the communicative translation method to translate the texts.Newmark proposes that a translator should select a translation strategy based on the text types. In his Approaches to Translation,Newmark argues that communicative translation is used for informative texts.Communicative translation focuses on the reader and the experience while reading, aiming at making the text more native and original.Figures of speech are not mechanically translated. When translating words and sentences, differences between the two languages as well as unique linguistic features are taken into consideration. The context is kept in mind and readers understanding of the source texts is considered. All these methods help produce on the readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained by readers of the original text.It can be concluded that translation of popular legal writing needs selection of proper translation strategy corresponding to the text types for the purpose of communication.
