Study On The Modernist Consciousness In The New Hollywood Comedy

The modernist consciousness of new Hollywood comedy originated from the influence of the avant-grade movement and the European Modernist Film. It always placed the serious and important matter into the unsuited text, which would highlight the irony and criticism.The new Hollywood Movement from the late 1960 s to the late 1970 s was a transitional period of Hollywood movies. During this time, comedy movies has no longer existed the huge advantage of cinematic genre as in the classical Hollywood time. Comedy has turn to a style which was caused by the trend of type fusion when it came to cultural discount and the rise of TV media. The reflexivity of comedy was not disappear, however it get further development in the war satirical comedy and urban sexual comedy. The performance and narrative way of comedy even became a method of cultural dissolving and cultural rebellion in the post-modernism context.There are multi-dimensions of modernity in comedy. And the diversion from type to style of comedy was worth thinking. The process of this diversion included both the migration of the modernist aesthetic and the construction and reflection of the individual consciousness in the film.This thesis would first explain the fuzzy concept of modernity, and then sort out the modernist consciousness of comedy movies before the New Hollywood Movement. Then it will study the transfer and continuation of the modernist consciousness of the European Avant-grade film and the European Modern film in the Hollywood comedy. At last it will focus on the value and significance of modernism in the American comedy between 1960 s and 1970 s.
