American writer Laurence Manning's novel The Man Who Awoke consists of five books, and The Forest People is the first book. The writer tells us a story of suspended animation. The hero Winters, as a biologist himself, invents a set of equipment to keep him under the state of suspended animation for three thousand years.Dialogues serve an effective way of character depiction, which is a central task of novel writing. It can reveal important information about the character, for example, his personality, background and psychological state, making the characters more vivid and true to life, and thus it deserves special attention in the translation process. When it comes to the dialogue translation, the translators should not only transmit the meaning of the words but also depict the unique images of the characters. In this translation practice, first of all, the translator attempted to grasp the features of the original text, and found that dialogue accounts for a large part. Therefore, the translator attached great importance to dialogue translation research in this paper. When translating dialogues, the translator focused on the functions of dialogues and then summarized the translation strategies for dialogue translation, so that the target readers can enjoy the novel as the original readers do. The translator mainly conducted this paper from three aspects, namely characters' images, dialogues context and quote verbs. Then the target readers can fully grasp the characters' personalities, understand the relationships between characters.
