Translation is one of the main approaches of cross-culture communication. In translation process, translators play the role as a bridge. Study on translator in the whole framework is an integral part of translation studies. Xu Yuanchong is an excellent representative of translator in China. He was born in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province and he is the professor of Beijing University. He has been engaged in literary translation for more than sixty years. His translation works includes Sino-British translation, Sino-French translation. His main translation works are from poem translation. Professor Xu summarizes his translation thoughts, theories and translation strategies from a lot of his translation practice. He is known as “the only person for poetry translation into English and French”Firstly, the thesis summarizes Xu Yuanchong's life and his translation career. And it gives a brief introduction about his translation works as well. And also it concludes the evaluation of domestic and foreign scholars towards professor Xu's translation thoughts and translation practice.Secondly, the thesis discusses Professor Xu Yuanchong's translation thought, theory and translation strategies. Xu's translation thoughts can be concluded as “Art of translation” i.e. “Three Beauty, Three hua and zhi” and “Advantages competition” i.e. Re-creation, Refinement, Resemblance and Rivalry. In this thesis, on one hand, it introduces all the above translation thoughts, theories or strategies in details. On the other hand examples are provided to illustrate how these thoughts, theories and strategies work in translation practice.Besides all these, the thesis also introduces the superiority of Xu Yuanchong's translation thoughts and also points the outstanding contributions that Xu made in translation studies. Without doubt, there exist some arguments on Xu's translation thoughts. However, these arguments promote Xu's translation thoughts developed.At last, the thesis dissects Xu's translation practice, taking Xu's poem translation as examples to illustrate the application of Xu's translation thoughts, theories and strategies. Through examples, the thesis analyzes Xu's translation thoughts of Three Beauty i.e. beauty in sense, beauty in form and beauty in sound; Three “hua” i.e. equalization, particularization and generalization; as well as re-creation and rivalry.
