On Translating English Attributive Clauses Into Chinese

This thesis is based on the English-Chinese translation of Peter Newmark's A Textbook of Translation.It focuses on the methods of translation that the translator finds to be most suitable in the translation of attributive clauses in,especially,long sentences.The topic of this thesis is relevant in this age as there is an increasing number of English native translators who have to translate into Chinese(their second language)almost as much as they have to translate into their mother language.It is therefore imperative that the translator be able to access substantial materials-based on the experience of other translators-that may assist in providing high-quality translations in the target language,which in this case is Chinese.The paper consists of four chapters.The first chapter gives an introduction to the project which includes the background,the purpose and significance of the research,and the structure of the thesis.It provides the reader with foundational information that is important to understanding the nature of this research and its contents.In the second chapter,the translator distinctly describes the whole translation process which includes the pre-translation preparations,the actual translation of the text,and the process of proofreading and modifying the first drafts of the translation.The third chapter,which is the core of this research paper,deals with the analysis of the Chinese translation of the chapter entitled"The Process of Translation".In this chapter,the commonly used methods of translating attributive clauses-combination,division and mixture-are defined and,with examples from the text,are proven to be applicable in the translation of very long sentences with clear indication of which method is most suitable and under what circumstance each method may be applied.In addition to these established methods,the translator acknowledges other convenient and efficient methods that have been applied during the translation process,and these methods are the uses of the em dash and brackets.Finally,the fourth chapter summarizes both the translation process and the contents of the case analysis and draws a conclusion that is based on the results of the case analysis.
