In the course of the development of oil painting,the use of light and shade is changing as time goes by.The works of different times reflects the different social consciousness.The history of Western oil painting contains the process of the awareness of light&shadow.Whether from the Renaissance when painters have objective understanding of light to the days when the impressionist painter subjectively use light or from the days when artists pay attention to perspective application of light to the days when light is thought as an independent visual elements,the light played a dominant role of the picture from the beginning to the end.In the long river of the history of Western painting,there are many masters using the light,created a wonderful picture with full of light perception through their understanding of light and using the rules of light,which formed the unique visual style.Whether the Renaissance master Da Vinci who found the "light and shade" or Caravaggio who found "cellar type" light.Whether Rembrandt who used the stage-light effect,or La Tour who use the "Candlelight" perfectly,they have been the classics about using light in the western oil painting field.In this paper,through the study of methods of using light by differ artists during the different periods,I listed and sorted out the methods of light&shade in the western oil painting.With using forms impressing on me for reference,with the realistic technique and the current social consciousness,I appropriately use optical principles to do the graduation creation,so that I can express inner feeling and show the atmosphere of picture by means of light and shadow.Through the process of my creation,I try to find my own suitable way to use light and painting techniques,so as to explore the use of light in the picture,it will have practical and further significance for my creation in the future.
