English Translation Problems Of A Dream Of Red Mansions

A Dream of Red Mansions is one representative work of Chinese classical novels and one of four major classical novels.It has its own characteristics no matter in the ideological content or artistic technique.It records different fields including natural science and the humanities such as culture,art,medicine,Clothing,construction,management and so on,called Chinese encyclopedia.As a literary classics,it has a timeless charm.It comes from Chinese culture and spread in China.Its translation versions help it spread abroad.In terms of its English translation,there are some abridges and some complete English translation.At present,the most popular full English translated versions of A Dream of Red Mansions are two versions translated by Yang Xianyi and David Hawks.Though these English versions are received well,author thinks that there are still some aspects to be improved.Author mainly researches it from the perspective of cultural translation,and makes parts of poems about Lin Daiyu translated by Yang Xianyi and Hawks as the main research objects.The author attempts to put forward her own ideas for reference though these two English versions comparison.The first part is mainly describing its cultural values and the spread meaning of its English translated version.The first chapter is the overview of the text,comprised the following sections.First,it is the introduction of Cao Xueqing.Second,it is the background of this book.Third,what it introduced is the present research status of A Dream of Red Mansions in the world.And finally it is concluded by the embodiment of its English version values from different aspects.The second chapter mainly discusses the translation strategies from some sentences in two English translated versions by Yang Xianyi and Hawks,and elucidates five translation methods:direct translation,liberal translation,addition,omission,transliteration with interpretation,then finds out some questions and makes author's constructive comments.The third chapter is about two versions comparison of Lin Daiyu's poems in A Dream of Red Mansions,which translated by Yang Xianyi and Hawks.In this chapter,author will read and analysis two kinds of English poems about Lin Daiyu with the supporting of translation theories to find some questions.The forth chapter discusses about the external communication of A Dream of Red Mansion.In this chapter,author will describe from two aspects which are the transmission limitations of A Dream of Red Mansions and improvement strategy.Author will make her own modest to promote to spread Chinese classical culture.
